It's On My Mind

2/2/10

I am a light sleeper, at least I used to be.  It would amaze me how other people could seemingly sleep through phone rings, storms, people talking, almost anything.  My wife, Barbie, was one of those who amazed me.  I would envy her because she seemed to sleep so soundly and woke up refreshed.

Then our first child, Paige, was born.  Barbie, the mother, was instantly changed!  She could still sleep through many things, but the least sound from the nursery and Barbie was awake before me.  It is amazing how God wires mothers.

I was thinking about this and realized, “Like a mother hearing the cry of her baby, Jesus is tuned in to the cries of His children.”  The story in Mark chapter 4 helped me realize this amazing truth.  With Jesus soundly asleep in the boat, the disciples were fearing for their lives.  Jesus was sleeping right through the wind and rain and storm.  However, when the disciples spoke to Him, He heard their cry.

You know the rest of the story; how Jesus calmed the storm and amazed the disciples.  I believe Jesus knows the storms you and I are in.  I also know He hears the cries of His children.  Psalms 121:3b says, “…..He that keepth thee will not slumber.”  We can rest because our Lord is ever vigilant.

It was just on my mind.

God loves you and so do I!

All of us, by now, have probably seen the pictures of the destruction in Haiti.  Amid the cries of the victims can be heard the singing of Christians as they run to their God for help, hope, and healing.  I have been praying that this would be the Church in Haiti's finest hour.  That out of the death and destruction the real message of LIFE Eternal would reach thousands of receptive hearts.  Let's keep praying for the people of Haiti and those there ministering to them.

Just a word of personal news from Haiti:  .  Yvrose and the children at the orphanage in Jeremie are ok and waiting on a safety inspection so they can again use their building.  Dwayne and Liz Seese's ministry is located a lot closer to Port a Prince and suffered more damage, although Hope house is still standing..

I have been thinking about the angel's proclamation to the shepherds on the night of Jesus' birth.  “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men,”  they sang.

We talk about the “peace of Christmas”, sing about it, send cards declaring it, but what is it?  Trying to define “peace” is not easy.  To the soldier, peace is a cessation of conflict.  To the  worn out mom, peace could mean just a few minutes of quiet and harmony in the family.  But whether you are wearing  the head gear of a soldier, mom, or any other occupation, real peace does have a common factor.

I believe when the angels declared peace on earth they were so excited that now through Jesus Christ man could really have peace within himself because he could be at peace with GOD.  The “Peace of Christmas,” real “Peace,” has nothing to do with a lot of stuff.  That's because “Peace” is not the absence of war, conflict, worry, problems, etc.  It IS the presence of the Prince of Peace, our LORD, Jesus Christ.

With 17 days left ‘till Christmas…..see how many times hearing or seeing references to “Peace” this Christmas reminds you of the Prince of Peace,  and rejoice with the angels!!!  Have a glorious day.

Tonight (Dec.1 st ) the President of the United States is scheduled to make a national speech laying out his strategy for the conflict in Afghanistan.  There are those who are opposed to the war and want to bring the troops home.  There are those who see the importance of successfully completing the mission of ridding the country of terrorist groups and helping to establish a more stable government.

Both parties are anxiously anticipating the speech and want to hear different things.  It is just a reminder to me of the tremendous responsibility the leader of our nation carries.

Thinking of this has me considering how we, as individuals, are handling our own struggles.  Reminded of Psalm 46:1 which says, “God is our Refuge and Strength , a very present help in trouble.”

Our own troop surge is when God places His Holy Spirit within and gives Him the green light to complete God's plans in our lives.  Now that is a plan that we can depend upon.

Continue to pray for our Country and Its leaders.  Continue to walk in victory as God completes His work in our lives. Have a good day. (24 more days until Christmas).

Barbie came home with a coupon advertising a free turkey. A closer look reveals that each purchase earns points that accumulate and can be exchanged, after enough points are earned, for a “free” turkey.

I thought, “Free? You’ve more that bought that bird by the time you earn all those points.” But hey, a free turkey is free. It’s gotta be.

Now, I know many people who are of the “no free lunch” philosophy. You know, it may be free for us but someone has to pay. Right?

Aren’t you glad that there is a free gift offered to us that is free. “….but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” I’m saving points for the turkey, but how thankful that I’m saved because of what Jesus did for me.

The House of Prayer Church family is praying for Terry Stapleton and his three sons. Early Sunday morning Terry’s wife, Amy, went home to be with the Lord. Amy is Woody Woodmansee’s daughter.

I just got off the phone with Arabelle Norris who is now living in Safety Harbor, Florida. Arabelle’s husband, Ed, fell last week and sustained severe head injuries. The Doctor has instructed Arabelle to have the family come in because he does not think Ed will recover from those injuries.

Two completely different needs that we as “family of God” pray for and indentify with. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4a says, “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble……”

Yes, He is the God of ALL comfort and we ask HIS ministry to these two families. At the same time He is there for you, also. Whatever the need, let Him be your source of comfort, today.

Revelation 4:11 says, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created.”  What an AWESOME God is our God!!

I just finished reading reports telling of some of the tremendous things God is doing among the Muslim people.  Many are hearing the Gospel of Jesus for the first time and accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.  In face of strong persecution and demonic opposition, God is proving Himself by miracles and great power.  God is building HIS kingdom one soul at a time.

Please be praying for a large harvest of believers from among some of the most “closed” countries of the world.  Our God is awesome and worthy of all our praise!

Do rainy days ever get on your mind.  Well, Monday is my day off from the church office and I usually spend it doing mowing jobs with my son, Zach, and catching up on other "stuff" around the house.  But that was not to be today.  We have been in the monsoon season it feels like.

Yes, we have had a lot of rain the last several days, and it isn't over yet.  I was sitting around the house bemoaning all the things I was not going to get done and how far behind I would be when I thought, "why not do some of the things I can do and not fret about what I can not do?"  Sounds simple enough, but it was a great help to me.

So I began to repent of a bad attitude toward the much needed rain and instead asked God to direct my work as HE would have it go.  I am excited and can hardly wait.  I hope the rain doesn't stop too soon because there is a lot I need to get done!

Isn't it amazing how God sometimes has to REdirect us with rainy days in our lives.  They can be a blessing!   "There shall be showers of blessings, Oh that today they might fall."  I trust you are having a great day.  Relax and let Jesus direct your plans.

It was just on my mind.

Look or listen to almost any news outlet and you will hear something about the “concern” being voiced about the health care debate.  Town hall meetings have been anything but boring and many people and organizations are letting their voices be heard.

My thought this morning is not about where you stand on this issue and the President's plan.  Rather, I am excited to see the level of involvement by ordinary people in our governmental process.  That's good for our Republic!

But as I think about this I think of Paul's prayer request to the Ephesian Christians.  In Ephesians chapter six Paul asks, “Pray for me that God would give me the right words and boldness to share the mystery of the Gospel?”

We have seen what happens when people get involved and passionate about an issue.  As Christians can't we make some connections to what could and should be happening in the marketplace as we get excited (bold) about sharing our love of our Jesus?

Why not ask Jesus to help you take advantage of the opportunities to speak up for HIM today.  It could be exciting.

Do you ever feel stressed?  Maybe a better question is , “Who hasn't ever felt stressed?”

Into all of our lives come those unexpected, uninvited and often unwanted interruptions that become stressors.  One or two we can juggle, but when they come in bunches, like bananas, what do you do?  I am always interested in what works for other people.

Let me share a couple of verses from a powerful short chapter ---Psalms 46.

“God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed.  And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling.  Selah.  Be still and know that I am God:  I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.  The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.  Selah.”

Now that is some powerful help for us when we are feeling swamped, overwhelmed, or just about stressed out.  Isn't it?  Run to your REFUGE today and rest.

Just this morning, I was reading from the tenth chapter of John where Jesus was affirming HIS position as the Good Shepherd.  Laying down His life for His sheep, He says His sheep know His voice and therefore will not follow a stranger.

Now there have been times when I really had to pray hard to be sure I was hearing what God was speaking to me and NOT just my own thinking.  I don't know if you have ever experienced that, but if you have you know it can be difficult.

As I read on just a little further I ran across a truth that gave new perspective to this relationship of sheep and Shepherd.  Verse 27 says,

“My sheep hear my voice, and I KNOW them……..”(my emphasis).

Now it is one thing for me to know The Shepherd and quite another for HIM to know me.  What comfort, what assurance, what security to know that The Shepherd know me!!

Today, with whatever you are dealing with, my this truth stay on your mind…..The Shepherd of my soul knows me…and loves me.

It was just on my mind.

Ecclesiastes 12:1 reminds us to remember our Creator (God) while we are young.

We are in the second week of youth camps at Canal Lake Bible Camp.  This week we have around 100 seven, eight and nine year olds.  Talk about energy!  Statistics tell us that most of the people who ask Jesus to be their Savior will do so by their 9th birthday.

Many of the campers this week are not from “a church”.  Please be in prayer for the counselors and workers, and for the Word of the Lord to fall on young fertile hearts ----that many campers would accept Jesus as Savior this week.

There were 8 teenagers who were saved last week(PTL).  Pastors Darryl and Kyle are doing a great job.  We have more volunteers helping in so many ways than ever before.  God is doing great things at CLBC and your prayers are the reason.  Keep it up---one more week next week with 10-12 yr old and a kiddy camp.

Isaiah chapter 12 is a beautiful chapter thanking God for HIS mercies.  Verse 3 says,

“Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.”

What a refreshing reminder of the JOY we have in The LORD of our Salvation, Jesus Christ.  So today take some time to drink deeply and joyfully of that Living Water!

Sunday's message was on Why Christians MUST pray.  The Lord really had a great follow-up for me in this morning's Bible reading.  Listen to 2 Chronicles 32 verses 7&8, “Be Strong and courageous!  Don't be afraid of the king of Assyria or his mighty army, for there is a power far greater on our side!  He may have a great army, but they are just men.  We have the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles for us!”

Scripture then says, “These words greatly encouraged the people.”  May they also be of great encouragement to YOU today.

No matter what “foes” you face today, your LORD is ready, willing, and able to handle the situation.  No wonder the people were so encouraged…..I am also.  Aren't you?

It is important to know where victory comes from!  Barbie and I were talking this morning about the conflict in 2 Chronicles chapter 13.  Judah, under the leadership of Abijah with 400,000 troops were facing Israel, under Jeroboam with 800,000 troops.

Two to one would seem to be pretty overwhelming odds.  However, Judah had a secret weapon.  Militarily Abijah made the fatal mistake, he allowed his enemy to surround him.  Listen to part of this passage:  “When Judah realized that they were being attacked from the front and the rear, they cried out to the LORD for help.  Then the priests blew the trumpets, and the men began to shout.  At the sound of their battle cry, God defeated Jeroboam and the Israelite army….So Judah defeated Israel because they trusted in the LORD….”

That statement has been on my mind all morning.  Today, as Christians, we seem to be facing overwhelming odds that the world has brought against us.  Our victory will come, not because of OUR wisdom, not because of OUR strength, and not because OUR cause is just.  Victory comes when we place our trust in the unfailing Lord!!

Like Judah of old let us call upon the LORD today, putting our trust in HIM, and watch HIM do the miraculous.

It was just on my mind.

Thank you for your patience while I have enjoyed a short R & R.

So let me share what is on a “relaxed” mind this morning.  As I read from 1 Chronicles chapter 21, the account of King David ordering the counting of fighting men under his command, the words of verse 7, “And God was displeased with this thing…” really jumped out at me.

God was so displeased that He “smote” Israel for David's sin.  What would cause God to be so angry with His servant?  And does He get angry with you and me when we do the same thing David did?

Think with me…..  God had been giving victory after victory to David and his people.  By numbering the troops David reveals a heart that is beginning to trust in its own strength (in this case number of armies) rather than in God.

How often do we find ourselves taking mental inventory of our “assets” to determine if the victory is ours?  It is so tempting and we can usually justify it by saying we are just being “wise”.  No matter what armies are lining up against you this morning…..TRUST in the LORD with ALL your heart.

Don't waste time numbering your assets and abilities.  I believe God delights when we trust!!  May HE delight in you today.

It was just on my mind.

God loves you and so do I!

5/27/09

While reading my devotions yesterday morning, I came across a verse that I had never noticed before. It was in a strange place, Eccesiastes chapter 5. King James says it this way:

“Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.”

Listen to the New Living Translation:

“As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut! Don’t be a fool who doesn’t realize that mindless offerings to God are evil.”

Verse 3 continues:

“Just as being too busy gives you nightmares, being a fool makes you a blabbermouth. So when you make a promise to God, don’t delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to Him. It is better to say nothing than to promise something that you don’t follow through on.”

How important it is for us to cultivate the art of listening to God! Sometimes He is the “still small voice”. Sometimes He speaks above the storm, “peace be still”. Ask Peter. Sometimes He says, “Walk to Me,” during the storm. But whatever He says, whenever He speaks, I want to be listening. Don’t you?

As one song writer says, “He speaks and the sound of His voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing, And the melody He speaks to me within my heart is ringing. And He walks with me and TALKS with me………”

Listen for HIS voice today. He wants us to hear HIS voice.

It was just on my mind.

“Blackberry winter” is what old people call it. When the blackberry briars bloom we will have a “cold snap”. Sure enough, yesterday morning Dominick Cardillo said he had ice on both his vehicle windows, and this morning I saw patches of frost. Hopefully my beans and tomatoes and other stuff will be ok.

But blackberry winter has killed many a vegetable in these mountains. I have grown up knowing this but still have a struggle with the temptation to plant early. Let some 70 and 80 degree weather hang around in April and I want to get those plants set.

Frost doesn’t kill all vegetables, some are more sensitive to the cold than others. This morning should have ended it for this year. Summer should be around the corner.

I think there is a spiritual lesson here. Often we are seeing “growth” in areas we have been praying for and are encouraged. We should be! But there often comes the “cold” winds of discouragement and doubt----blackberry winter. They can threaten to kill what we have worked so hard to grow. We shouldn’t be surprised just prepared.

The sun is already warming things up nicely. It is going to be a nice day. Let the warmth of the SON bathe you in HIS love today. And, hey, expect a bountiful harvest.

It was just on my mind.

God loves you and so do I!

“Only seven more days of school”, but who is counting? Sure enough it is already that time. The time when students AND TEACHERS begin looking forward to the much anticipated “break”. That is one thing I surely miss.

I don’t think we have those kinds of calendars in the pastorate. I think it is good for all of us to have something to look “expectantly” toward. Whether it is the end of school, a planned trip, vacation, or completing the “project” you’ve been working on expectation brings with it a measure of hope. And we all need hope.

Romans chapter 5 opens with a great passage about our hope:

“Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us---they help us learn to endure. And endurance develops strength of character in us, and character strengthens our confident expectation of salvation. And this expectation will not disappoint us. For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love.”

An expectation that won’t disappoint-----wow. Now that is something we can ALL look forward to. Don’t you think? What are you looking forward to?

The Blessing……is on my mind this morning. I was thinking about the Sunday evening service at HOP when we ordained Nathan Helton into Christian service as God leads him. It was a beautiful and significant service.

Then I thought of the two sons of Isaac, Jacob and Esau. Remember Jacob deceiving his father and receiving Esau's blessing. Esau lifted up his voice and wept loudly…he had not received the blessing.

I know there is a lot of Old Testament “stuff” about the father's blessing. I still think that is important to our children. However, think with me just a minute or so. Psalms 3:8 says, “Victory comes from you, O LORD. May Your blessings rest on Your people.” Proverbs 10:22 says, “The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.” Romans 15:29 refers to the blessing of the Gospel.

So I would say that as Christians we are not strangers to the blessing and blessings of God. No matter what you are going thru today, I think you can find those in your life. Take time to thank HIM for them. Know that you are BLESSED by our LORD.

It was just on my mind.

Yesterday was wonderful!  I got to spend several hours on the tractor preparing to plant some garden “stuff”.  As every gardener/farmer knows very well; you plan, prepare, and plant but the increase depends upon God.

The writer of Proverbs puts it like this, “The horses are prepared for battle, but the victory belongs to the LORD.” (Proverbs 21:31 NLT)

What is true with the gardens and with preparation for the battle, I believe, is also true for life.  There are no substitutes for planning, preparing, and hard work, but we should NEVER forget that the victory is from God.  So work hard, plan well, prepare as if it all depended upon you, but keep your eyes upon our God for it ALL depends upon HIM.  I'm glad for that, aren't you?

It was just on my mind.

Many of you know my love for “March Madness”.  ( For the non-sports enthusiasts that is the play-off for the college basketball championships.)  The tournament brackets came out Sunday evening.  These 65 teams are preparing for the climactic conclusion of their basketball season with the national championship as the prize awaiting the winner.

I know that I will spend too much time watching these games----but It's hard for me not to.  Thinking about my passion for this sport, for all the media coverage, and the huge number of resources and people involved, I was drawn back to the passage in the book of Philippians.

Let me quote from the NLT, Philippians 3:12-14 , “I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection!  But I keep working toward that day when I will finally be all that Christ Jesus saved me for and wants me to be.  No, dear friends, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing:  Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus , is calling us up to heaven.”

Now that is a worthy goal we can all strive for all the time, not just in March.  Keep preparing.  Stay in the game.  Don't quit.  There is a trophy awaiting (crown) with your name on it.

It was just on my mind.

God loves you and so do I!

Barbie was going through old church minutes and mission minutes while she was getting some historical information for the missions conference.  I realized the blessings of God we are enjoying is because faithful men and women walked in obedience to God before us.

There never seemed to be a lot of extra money.  The minutes often would show a few dollars in the church account, but there would be a notation “all bills paid”.  Yet when God called them to build a Bible Camp, or add on a church addition, or new sanctuary, it seemed the question was always, “Is this what we are supposed to do?”  Once decided, that was it…..Let's do it.

This is not a precursor for us (the church) to “do” something.  It is just a reminder for me.  I pray that those who come behind me would also find a trail of faithfulness;  A path walked in obedience to God's Word and leading.

Psalm 61:5 says,  “For Thou, O God, hast heard my vows:  Thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear Thy name.”

When the cares of this world and the cares of the daily needs are screaming in your ear, it becomes even more necessary to find the quiet place where you can hear HIS voice.

Barbie and I have been working on our taxes…….depressing.   I just spoke with a young mom as she shared about some struggles with jobs, foreclosures, etc…….depressing.

Many have lost a significant amount of their savings, retirement, etc. as Wall Street continues its plummet……depressing.  Every day we are ministering to families and people who are “hurting” because of the recession…..depressing.  Job openings ….who has heard of any?   It can all be depressing.

BUT  are you  ready for some good news?  Philippians 4:19 is just as true today as it has ever been…..”But my GOD shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

Debate over the stimulus plan has now turned into a political joke but no one is laughing.  Our Heavenly Father's resources are limitless.  His door is open ….go on in and talk with HIM.  You will leave reassured and I trust no longer depressed.

By the way the next verse says, “Now unto God and our Father be glory for ever and ever.  Amen.”

It was just on my mind.

Last Wednesday evening for our Prayer Meeting we were looking at Psalm chapter 25.  Long ago I learned the first two verses in a chorus and found myself singing them as I studied.  You will remember them….”Unto Thee O LORD, do I lift up my soul.  O my God, I trust in Thee; let me not be ashamed, let not my enemies triumph over me.”  In the familiar following verses David asks the LORD to:

Shew him…Thy ways

Teach me…Thy paths

Lead me….in Thy truth; and teach me.

I was thinking: what an Awesome Heavenly Father with HIS personal touch.  So personal that He becomes our personal tutor through the Holy Spirit, to shew, lead, and teach you and me.  Just another reason to stand in awe of HIM and HIS love for us.  Have a good day in HIS school.

It was just on my mind.

What a week!!  If you were able to attend HOP Sunday you were blessed and excited to hear Dr. Terry Law share some of the exciting things God is doing, especially in the Muslim countries.  Second service Dr. Law preached a timely message on Grace during these difficult times.

Then I am looking forward to Friday evening and the Annie Moses Band concert.  Hope to see you there.

Lord willing, I will begin a series of messages building up to Easter Sunday.  The tentative series title will be “Four days that changed the world.”  I am excited what the Lord is showing me.

Pray that I will be able to communicate HIS thoughts and words clearly.  Please be in prayer about these messages.  Scripture declares Christ to be the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and End.  Indeed HE is all this,  and EVERYTHING in between.  And HE desires to walk in a relationship with each of us!!! WOW!   Enjoy the journey today with HIM at your side.

Reading from 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, I ran across verses 23 and 24 which say, “Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until that day when our LORD Jesus Christ comes again.  God, who calls you, is faithful; He will do this.”

I was “blown away” by realizing how much it is ALL about God.  He is making us holy, He is keeping us blameless, HE IS FAITHFUL do this.  Now that is something to think about.

I trust you will have a great day walking with the Savior.

Does it bother you when people don't finish what they start?  He can be a great builder, but if he doesn't finish the “final touches” to complete a job, the unfinished part seems to be what I see.  They can be a fantastic coach but you have to be and coach your team to be finishers.  Never give up.  Never quit in the middle of a game or season.

That was sure one thing about the super bowl Sunday night, neither team quit.  It was a great game and while Pittsburg goes home national champions, Arizona goes home  with their heads lifted up.  (Except for those defensive backs on the last reception by Holmes.  I'm just kidding.)

Paul tells the Philippian Christians this early in his letter, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”  That's exciting to me.

Hey, God ain't finished with us yet.  What He has started in your life, He will complete.  We have HIS WORD on it.  So have a great day in THE MASTER'S workshop.  What HE is doing in you is looking good!

It was just on my mind.
